Villa D'Este

Granted unparalleled access for 3-years to Villa D'Este on Lake Como, I visited often when the light was gentle against the stark shadows of the water to photograph with black and white, infrared film. The same shores William Henry Fox Talbot had visited not knowing how to draw.

Here is a small selection of plates.

“How charming it would be if it were possible to cause these natural images to imprint themselves durably, and remain fixed upon the paper. And why should it not be possible?” —William Henry Fox Talbot, visiting Lake Como, 1833
